At age 13 he lived in on the streets of Washington , D.C. , drinking vodka, stealing and vandalizing. But in his freshman year in high school he attended a basketball camp which changed his life. He became hooked on basketball and started to realize that he was going in the wrong direction. So he changed. Forty-two years later he is still hooked on basketball. He also has formed “Slam Dunk for Life”,(a non-profit organization) which is a series of free basketball camps for at-risk kids in San Antonio, Texas, grades 6-8. This program uses basketball to teach life’s lessons.
Dr. Edwin J. (Eli) Whitney is now a renowned cardiologist with the Heart and Vascular Institute of Texas. After graduating from the University of Maryland in 1972 he went on to become a cardiologist and served 20 years in the USAF. He is a prolific author, writer, and humanitarian. He founded “Slam Dunk for Life” with his own money and he is the sole financial backer. This program now in the last 3 years has assisted thousand’s of kids to become what they want to be.
Dr. Whitney has certainly Achieved the Extraordinary in his life and is helping other Achieve the Extraordinary in theirs.
